The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has notified Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017 under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 as regulatory framework for conservation and management of wetlands in India. This is a significant step to conserve, manage and maintain the ecological character of the wetlands without restricting the wise use.
The rules provide for an advisory role for the National Wetland Committee, to guide the state bodies on the integrated management of wetlands based on wise‐use principle and review the progress of integrated management of Ramsar Convention sites among other roles.
