Any plan or project likely to have a significant effect on a Natura 2000 site should be regulated by the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) which ensures the conservation of a wide range of rare, threatened or endemic animal and plant species and regulates and is complemented by the more specific Bird Directive (79/409/EEC). They are designed to ensure that the species listed in the Directives reach a favorable conservation status within the EU.
